Projects that use NeL 2003-08-27

Hulud from Digital Murder wrote an awesome texture generator using NeL for Windows only. You can download the 1.0b version here.

Ace, Muf and Skeet from Melting Pot created Mtp Target game that is a multiplayer clone of Monkey Target on PC using, of course, NeL. It works on Windows and GNU/Linux. You can learn more about this game here (french page).

FSFE France enters Free Software Gaming 2002-11-04

Nevrax decided to outsource the Free Software community management to FSFE France. The fifteen developers working on NeL at Nevrax will continue to operate under high pressure to meet their deadlines while FSFE France will be in charge of connecting them with the Free Software world. FSFE France enters Free Software Gaming.
The CVS page has been updated to reflect those changes.

I updated the NeL samples directory. Now it contains one sub-directory per lib, for example, there's a directory for misc samples, another one for net, and so on.

You can find a brief explanation of what sample do: http://www.nevrax.org/docs/doxygen/nel/nelsamples.html

Nevrax UDP benchmark 2002-03-28

We developed a little client/server application.

This program tests the UDP connection between your computer and a Nevrax server. It reports some stats about packet lost, ping time and other information on this connection.

You can launch this program for 1 minute, 1 hour, all the time if you want. More often this program will run, more accurate information we'll have. So if you can, leave this program always running.

All informations/stat/graph will be released on the nervrax site.

All sources of this application are available on the nel/samples/udp directory.

Click here to download the Windows client version.

Thank you for your help.

Update: There's a new version of the client (02/03/29 2:00PM) that is not backward compatible. Get the last one to be sure that it'll be work fine with the server.

Update2: There's a new version of the client (02/04/10 11:00AM). Get the last one to be sure that it'll be work fine with the server and *erase* your client.cfg before running the new client.

Screenshot selection unveiled 2001-03-02

We have made a few screenshots internally, while checking various parts of the Snowballs sample game. After much debate, we've selected a few that we think are pretty representative.

Note that these shots are representative of a technology demo, and do not reflect our planned game or gameplay.

Snowballs goes 0.2 ! 2001-02-07

Another milestone for NeL and the Snowball sample game. We've improved some parts of the library itself, and lots of work was done on the client (including some nifty effects - look toward the sun, for instance). The CVS should be up to date.

The main improvement, however, is the fact that you can run both server and client on GNU/Linux (if you have accelerated 3D drivers working on your X server).

As in the previous release, we're releasing source tree and data files (which you'll find much reduced in volume, down below 10Mb from their previous 16Mb) in separate packages, and do not provide pre-built binaries.

If you have already installed Snowballs, do not forget to replace your data directory with the current version. Also important: We have included a working ns.cfg file to avoid the recurrent error trying to connect to our internal test server.

The archives may be downloaded there:

Note: The zip archive contains the source tree in DOS text format, whereas the tar.gz archives contains the source in Unix text format. Both should compile equally well, but one might be easier to edit on your system.

Nel 0.2 is out ! 2001-01-17

We are proud to announce the release of the 0.2 version of the NeL framework. This framework comprises the NeL library, and a basic client and server source for a simple game called Snowballs. The CVS will be updated shortly, and the 0.2 release tagged. We are including the data files required for the game separately.

If you are following the CVS regularly, you just have to update, download the data archive, compile and run. Otherwise, you may also download separately the source tree of the 0.2 release without using CVS.

We do not provide a pre-built set of binaries, as the 0.2 release isn't really representative of the full technology we want to use. The server has been tested under GNU/Linux, and the client under Windows. If you want to use it, there is a demo server running here, on which the client connects by default.

For any questions, we have opened a new mailing list dedicated to the Snowballs demo game, snowballs@nevrax.org. Questions and reports about the client, server, or game data themselves should be directed there, while all discussions on the NeL library itself should remain under the nel@nevrax.org mailing list.

The archives may be downloaded there:

Note: The zip archive contains the source tree in DOS text format, whereas the tar.gz archives contains the source in Unix text format. Both should compile equally well, but one might be easier to edit on your system.

RMS at Nevrax 2000-11-15

We had the honor of receiving here at the Nevrax offices Richard Stallman, the founder of the Free Software Foundation. He came for a visit and a conference on the ethics and philosophy of the Free Software movement (not to be confused with Open Source, he insists). He spoke at length of the why and how the FSF was born, its contributions to the now popular GNU/Linux system, and why its ideas must be nurtured and spread to keep the spirit of Free Software alive.

There was also a lengthy discussion of the NeL platform itself, its implications, and its position in the world of Free Software. Copyright issues were analyzed, and a few suggestions made. The conference closed with a small gift from the art department, specially made for Mr Stallman.

Here are a few moments of the conference:
